Social Casinos: Free Casino Games With Virtual Coins and No Real Prizes

Lucas Garner
Written by Lucas Garner.

A social casino is a free-to-play app or website with slots and table games that run on virtual coins only. You can buy more coins, but you can never cash them out or win real prizes, which is what separates a social casino from a sweepstakes casino.

Social casinos are entertainment products, not gambling sites. Slotomania and DoubleDown Casino, two long-running examples, both state on their own sites that their games are for amusement only, offer no real money gambling or real prizes, and are intended for players 21 and older (checked November 2026).

This guide explains how social casino coins and purchases work, how social casinos differ from sweepstakes casinos and real money casinos, and how to keep spending under control. PeakyCasino may earn a commission from sign-ups through this page; it does not affect our ratings.

How Do Social Casinos Work?

Social casinos give you a stack of free virtual coins or chips, which you spend on casino-style games. When the stack runs low, you can wait for free top-ups or buy more coins with real money.

Everything stays inside the game. Coins buy spins, unlock machines and move you up levels, but they never convert into cash, gift cards or other prizes.

  • Free coins: a starting balance, daily bonuses, level-up rewards and social media gifts.
  • Paid coins: optional in-app purchases through the app store, Facebook or the site’s own payment page.
  • Progress features: levels, collections, clubs and leaderboards that reward play time, not money.
  • Social features: gifting coins to friends, teams and tournaments for status.

Some purchases are random. Slotomania and DoubleDown Casino both disclose that you can buy virtual items with real money, “including random items”, and that in-app purchases can be switched off in your device settings.

Social Casino vs Sweepstakes Casino: What Is the Difference?

A social casino never pays prizes; a sweepstakes casino lets you redeem Sweeps Coins for cash or gift cards. The two are often grouped together, but they run under different rules and suit different players.

Attribute Social casino Sweepstakes casino Real money online casino
Currencies One virtual coin or chip Gold Coins + Sweeps Coins Cash or crypto
Real prizes None Yes, from redeemed Sweeps Coins Yes, withdrawals
Purchases Optional coin packs Optional Gold Coin packs with free Sweeps Coins Deposits required to bet
Identity checks Usually none beyond the account Required before redemption Required before withdrawal
State restrictions Few; set by each app Many states excluded by operators Depends on license and state law
Where you play App stores, Facebook, web Mostly web; apps vary Web and apps

If you want a chance at prizes, a social casino is the wrong product. Our guide to sweepstakes casinos covers Gold Coins, Sweeps Coins and redemption rules. If you want to bet cash under a license, see our list of real money casinos.

Are Social Casinos Legal in the US?

Social casinos are generally legal across the US because players cannot win money or prizes, which removes the prize element of gambling. As of November 2026, they are offered through the major app stores and on the web in most states.

That status is not absolute. In Kater v. Churchill Downs (March 28, 2018), the US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit held that virtual chips in the Big Fish Casino app, as alleged in the complaint, were a “thing of value” under Washington’s broad gambling definition, because they extended the privilege of playing. The ruling turned on Washington law and the facts alleged; it did not ban social casinos nationwide.

Prize redemption is the line regulators watch. When a site adds redeemable coins, it becomes a sweepstakes casino and falls under the state actions described in our guide to US sweepstakes promotional law.

Who Are Social Casinos For?

Social casinos suit players who want casino-style games for fun, with no deposits, no identity checks and no prize pressure. They are a poor fit for anyone hoping to win money or prone to impulse buying.

  • Casual players: short sessions on a phone, with daily free coins.
  • Learners: practicing slot features and table game rules before trying anything else.
  • Social players: clubs, gifting and leaderboards with friends.
  • Players in restricted states: where sweepstakes and real money casinos are unavailable, a social casino is the free-play option.

How Do You Choose a Social Casino?

Choose a social casino by its free coin supply, its spending controls and its age rating, not by its game count. A good app lets you play well without paying and makes purchases easy to switch off.

  1. Free coin supply: check how often free coins arrive and whether the free amount supports a normal session.
  2. Spending controls: confirm you can disable in-app purchases in your device settings and set app store spending limits.
  3. Random purchases: avoid packs with random contents if you tend to buy repeatedly.
  4. Age rule: Slotomania and DoubleDown Casino state they are intended for players 21 and older.
  5. Advertising: some apps show ads in exchange for free coins; decide if that suits you.
  6. Account linking: Facebook or Apple sign-in keeps progress across devices.

Do Social Casino Games Pay Like Real Casino Games?

No direct comparison is possible, because social casino payouts are in virtual coins and their return rates are not regulated. Success in a social casino does not predict results at a real money casino.

Both Slotomania and DoubleDown Casino state that playing or success in their games “does not imply future success” at real money gambling. Licensed real money slots usually publish a return-to-player (RTP) figure; to learn what that number means, see our guide to return to player.

What Are the Risks of Social Casinos?

The main risk is spending real money on coins that have no value outside the game. Because nothing can be won, every purchase is pure entertainment spending.

  • Repeat purchases: coin packs are cheap individually and add up over a month.
  • Random items: packs with random contents work like a lottery for virtual goods.
  • Minors: shared devices can let children buy coins; use app store parental controls.
  • Habit forming: daily bonus timers and streaks are built to bring you back.

Play Responsibly

Set a monthly limit on coin purchases, or switch purchases off entirely, and treat social casino play as screen time. If casino-style games stop being fun, take a break.
